Bank Muscat Launches Oman's First Instant Mobile Credit Card

Bank Muscat has rolled out end-to-end instant credit card issuance through its mobile banking app, letting customers skip branch visits entirely, a small but telling sign of how far Oman's digital banking has come.

Bank Muscat has become the first lender in the Sultanate to let customers apply for, get approved, and start spending on a brand-new credit card entirely through a smartphone, with no branch visit and no paperwork required at any stage of the process.

🔑 Key Takeaways

  • Bank Muscat launched instant, end-to-end digital credit card issuance through its Mobile Banking app on 20 September 2026, according to Oman Observer.
  • Customers can select from the bank's full retail credit card range, get approved, and view a live CVV and expiry date in-app immediately, all without visiting a branch to sign documents.
  • The digital card tokenises straight into Apple Pay and Samsung Pay for contactless spending, with a physical card available later via free courier delivery.
  • The launch is the third "instant" digital product Bank Muscat has rolled out in 2026, following an instant digital debit card and an instant personal loan through the same app in January 2026, per The Arabian Stories.
  • It lands against a backdrop of Central Bank of Oman rules that opened the door to digital-only banks and pushed lenders toward e-KYC and app-based onboarding.

📱 What Actually Changed

Until now, Oman Observer reports that customers applying for a credit card through Bank Muscat's digital channels still had to visit a branch in person to sign physical documents before a card could be issued, even if the initial application was submitted online. According to Oman Observer's report, that step has now been removed entirely for the new service.

The updated flow works like this: a customer logs into the Bank Muscat Mobile Banking app, opens the credit card section, and chooses from the bank's retail card lineup based on their eligibility. Once approved, the card is issued instantly in digital form, with the customer able to view the card number, CVV, and expiry date securely inside the app for immediate online purchases. The same digital card can be tokenised and added to Apple Pay or Samsung Pay for contactless payments at point-of-sale terminals. Customers can also toggle international usage on or off directly from the app, and a physical card, delivered free of charge by courier, remains available for those who want one. Fees and credit limits are unchanged from the standard application process.

"In continuation of our 'instant' theme this year, we are proud to launch end-to-end digital credit card."

- Abdullah bin Hamood al Jufaili, Assistant General Manager, Digital Banking, Bank Muscat

🏦 Part of a Pattern, Not a One-Off

This is not Bank Muscat's first "instant" launch of the year. In January 2026, the bank introduced an instant personal loan through the same Mobile Banking app, with automatic eligibility checks against the bank's credit policy and same-day fund disbursement after one-time password verification, as reported by The Arabian Stories. Al Jufaili was quoted at the time saying the bank was advancing its digital transformation vision by adopting "smart technologies that redefine the banking customer experience, placing speed, efficiency, and transparency at the core." The bank had also previously introduced an instant digital debit card. Stitched together, the three launches point to a deliberate strategy of removing manual, paper-based steps from the retail lending and card business, one product category at a time.

Oman Observer's report notes that Oman has traditionally been a debit-card-heavy market, but credit card usage has been climbing over the past two years, a trend that gives Bank Muscat's largest-in-the-market retail card book extra weight in this rollout.

⚙️ The Regulatory Backdrop

The move also sits inside a broader push by the Central Bank of Oman (CBO) to digitise financial services. The CBO's Regulatory Framework for Digital Banks, effective since June 2025, formally defined digital-only banking licences in Oman and set out requirements for e-KYC, digital onboarding, cybersecurity, and anti-fraud controls that incumbent banks are also expected to meet as they push more products onto app-based rails. Instant, branch-free card issuance is a direct, visible example of an established lender operating inside that same digital-onboarding standard rather than a separate greenfield entrant. This kind of incremental digitisation complements the fintech infrastructure covered in Oman's new national fintech strategy and digital gateway, where account-opening and payment rails are also being streamlined at the national level.

🇴🇲 Why This Matters for Oman

A single bank feature might look like a small story next to national AI zones or sovereign chip investments, but retail banking friction is exactly the kind of everyday obstacle Vision 2040's digital economy targets are meant to solve. Every branch visit removed from a routine financial product is time and cost saved for ordinary residents and a data point for regulators tracking how quickly Oman's cashless ambitions are actually reaching consumers, not just headline infrastructure. As more of Oman's banks race to match this kind of end-to-end digital journey, competitive pressure alone should keep pushing account opening, lending, and card issuance further away from paper and branch counters and closer to the phone in a customer's pocket.
